Professor Charles Knight

Professor Charles Knight trained at Cambridge and Oxford Universities and is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Executive Director of the Barts Heart Centre (the largest cardiac unit in the UK) and Managing Director of St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

From 2008 to 2011 he was Honorary Secretary of the British Cardiovascular Society, the professional body for UK Cardiologists and other healthcare workers with an interest in cardiovascular medicine.

Professor Knight is a member of the Royal College of Physicians Cardiology Specialty Advisory Committee. He is a specialist advisor to the NICE interventional procedures programme. He is past head of Cardiology training in London as Chair of the London Cardiology Specialty Training Committee. He was Associate Editor of ‘Heart’ journal, the UK’s leading Cardiovascular journal. Professor Knight is a member of the consultant staff at King Edward VII hospital.

Professor Knight assisted Professor Ulrich Sigwart at the world’s first septal ablation procedure at the Royal Brompton in June 1994. Since then he has helped pioneer this non-surgical treatment for patients with heart muscle disease and attracts referrals from the UK and abroad. He performs septal ablation for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy more frequently than any other UK cardiologist.

His research interests include acute coronary syndromes, renal and cardiac disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, in which he has published over 100 scientific papers. He is regularly invited to lecture at national and international meetings and has performed coronary angioplasty live for training purposes at prestigious international meetings (EuroPCR and TCT).

Professor Knight sees all general cardiology patients but has a special interest in the assessment of chest pain, coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention.
